A Simple Site Design
Since this is a site about old computers I wanted to make sure the
content could be accessed by old computers, with outdated browsers.
My goal here is not to impress people with cutting-edge design but
to share information and make it accessible. In my opinion, this is
one area in where the modern "web" is lacking. There are a lot of
attractive sites but sometimes the content is obscured by too much
extraneous material, especially advertisements and other elements
designed to capture our focus and get us to click on something. And
if a person is trying to find information on an old piece of
equipment, and using that old equipment that does not support most
of the modern features of the web, it can be an extremely bad
experience. I hope I can contribute to the community with good
information that is more accessible than beautiful.
I'm using the SeaMonkey software suite to create and publish these
pages. SeaMonkey is an Open Source application and includes a
Browser and a website Composer (as well as mail, newsgroup and IRC
modules). The website Composer is simple and old-fashioned, similar
to an old word processor in function. This is perfect for this
project since it keeps the web pages simple enough to browse with an
old-fashioned browser that you might have available on an old
computer, including a "text only" browser like Lynx, or a simple
graphics browser like Links or Dillo. I will use my old 286 DOS
machine to test the pages in Lynx and my Win98SE or Linux machines
to test in Links or Dillo.
I am using simple HTML and hyperlinks. To move around use the top
menu bar to go to the Home page or one of the other pages. Each link
on the top menu will open a new window so the Home page will remain
open so you can always get back to the start. The Blog link will
take you to my separate Blog pages and all of the links on the Links
page will take you to those other sites. There is no forum or
comments here, although the Blog will take comments. I am active on
some of the forums and facebook pages on the Links page. My username
is usually Seaken64.

I have used the spelling of "Komputers" in my title because it fit
my long-used "SMK" moniker for my personal business. Before I joined
my wife's family business at the Cracker Mill I owned a small
drywall company named SMK Drywall. I have since renamed by personal
business as "Sean M Kennedy, Associates" and I stylize the name on
my stationery with a bold S, M, and K. Several years ago I created a
separate entity named Small Micro Komputers as I was considering
offering some computer consulting services under my personal
business. As it turned out I ended up too busy with our family
hearth business and I never followed through with the computer
consulting. I decided to resurrect that business naming idea on this
website only I changed the title to Sean's Micro Komputers.
For you younger folk, when personal computers first started being
more common in small businesses. we called them "Micro" computers to
distinguish them from their big brothers, the Main-frames and
Mini-computers of the day. Eventually "Micro" computers became
"Personal Computers" in the general vernacular. Since my computer
hobby centers around old computers that were often used in small
business I chose the term "Micro" to be included in my title. Plus,
again, it fits my SMK moniker.
